One hypothetical theory is based on the fact that Spanish private enterprises operate quite similar packages as other European travel agencies, whose presence in the international tourist market is higher. That is the case of United Kingdom (205,200 tourists to China in 1997), France (123,300), Italy(62,000), the countries of the Benelux (41,300),and Switzerland(33,400) (Benewick and Donald 1999). If this theory is true, this means that the spatial distribution of Chinese tourist destinations for Europeans overall follows the same path shown by the Spanish ones.
