In January 1909,Jawlensky and several other artist friends started the Neue Kunstlervereinigung Munche(N.K.V.M.,New Artists'Association of Munich).Kandinsky became chairman,and Jawlensky his deputy.In their joint circular letter for the foundation of the association,they wrote,"Our starting point is the idea that the artist not only receives new impressions from the world outside,from nature,but that he also gathers experiences in an inner world.And indeed,it seems to us that at the moment more artists are again spiritually united in their search for artistic forms.They are looking for forms that will express the mutual interdependence of all these experiences and which are free from everything irrelevant.The aim is that only those elements which are actually necessary should be expressed with emphasis.In other words,they are striving for an artistic synthesis...."The first part of this artistic creed is expressed in almost identical words in Kandinsky's programmatic essay On the Spiritual in Art.The demand that an artist should draw from his inner world refers to his abstract compositions,where he aimed to put precisely this into practice.Jawlensky was more concerned with synthesis-a term which he liked and therefore used quite frequently to describe his artistic intentions.However,he did not use the word unambiguously.His own words make it quite clear that the term synthesis could have a diversity of meanings,some of them even contradictory.On the one hand,Jawlensky aimed to achieve a synthesis between the impressions from the outer world and the experiences of an inner world;that is to say,he tried to harmonize the original object with his ambition to achieve expressive colours.Frequently,on the other hand,synthesis had a much simpler meaning and expressed the harmonious result of pictorial composition and a balance of forms and colours.
