听Sting这首Fields of Gold的时候，还在遥远的高中
从朋友那里拿到那盘翻录的Ten Summoner's Tales，反复听了很久，印象最深的就是这首
当时并没有太留意歌词，只是觉得旋律很打动人，也就通过这盘专辑认识了这个其貌不扬的英国歌手
后来渐渐开始注意歌词，去想象那些隐藏的故事，仔细读了Fields of Gold，才进一步认识了这位音乐诗人

当Sting醇厚而略带沙哑的歌声，自那片金色麦田之上飘来，我仿佛完全融入了那片Fields of Gold
试图去描述这种感觉完全是徒劳的，因为Sting的音乐和歌声就如同在金色麦田上飘忽的西风
深沉低徊，却又无法捕捉
在专辑中，Sting写到：“在我的人生里头一回看到了麦田，我第一次有了这样的想法——我愿死在这里...”

前一段时间刚去了同事老家浙江新登，在那里第一次看到了麦田，就想起了这首歌
把身体埋入金色的稻穗波浪中，仿佛可以听到那些诗意的吟唱和悠扬的风笛
那时候，只觉得自己像一株熟透了的麦子

回到上海，想把这首歌词翻译一下，就把歌词发给在国外的一个朋友
没想到朋友还专门打越洋电话来和我好好讨论了一番，说读这首歌词觉得象在读一个故事...
今天根据朋友和我的讨论，另外还找了一些资料，试着翻译一下吧

找资料时，还发现女歌手Eva Cassidy翻唱过这首歌，一些外国评论说超出了Sting
下载下来一听，觉得有些刻意的忧伤，还是喜欢Sting的原唱

This is about feeling joyous, but knowing that the joy is going to end someday.
Sting wrote this after he bought a house near a barley field. The sunsets and the colours of the field were an inspiration for the lyrics, along with his love at the time. (thanks, Charlotte - coventry, England)
Sting started writing this on the guitar. He thinks his simple songs are often his best, and uses this as an example.
Sting's wife, Trudie Styler, considers this one of her favorites.
The album title is a play on Sting's real name, Gordon Sumner, as well as a reference to The Canterbury Tales. In the book, which was written by Geoffrey Chaucer in the 1400s, people from different backgrounds each tell stories, including tales by a nun, a miller, a knight, and a summoner. A summoner was someone who summoned a person for the king or some formal function. Like the book, Sting thought the album was a collection of songs that told many different tales.
This song sounds like an old Irish love tale.

This is one of those "motion picture in your mind" songs. It wouldn't matter if I was in a driving rainstorm, when I hear this song it takes me to that place...the field. I can see the stalks swaying and the sun shining down and bare feet walking in the fields of gold. What a great song!

This song seems to me to be about growing old with someone. Fields of gold is an analogy for the couple in this songs' life - looking back on it pleasantly. It starts with the person singing about how much his partner will miss him, but look back at their time together as something great. Then it moves to their relationship when they first met, and works it's way through their life together. The end is an old man (or woman really) talking to his/her love about their life. "Many years have passed, since those summer days, among the fields of barley. See the children run, as the sun goes down, among the fields of gold. You'll remember me...." At the end of the song, he's alluding that even something as timeless as the sun would look upon their life as well spent. Pathetic attempt to explain such a meaningful song. One of my favorites.

Question: Tell us about Fields Of Gold.

STING: Well I moved to the country for the first time in my life in, in England. And, um, there are barley fields right next door. And, uh, I remember walking through one day and, and just, just seeing this crop being moved by the, the, the wind and the sunshine. And it looked like, um, - well there could have been people making love in the barley! (laughs) Or the wind could have been, y'know, the wind seemed like it was making love to the barley. So, I thought that was a great metaphor for love. And, uh, I don't know. It's kind of a love song.

Question: The end of Fields Of Gold sounds like Bob Dylan's My Back Pages.

STING: Well I, I'm perfectly willing to, uh, say that, you know, Bob Dylan was a, a seminal force in my young years. You know, both lyrically and melodically. I 'spose every songwriter has to tip his hat to Bob Dylan at some point, y'know? So I, I don't mind that at all.

Question: As you develop musically do you find it harder to write simple songs?

STING: It's the hardest thing of all to do is to write a simple song. Um, I, I don't think that means you can stop studying. I don't think you should really...you can't get to the end of music. That's the great thing about it. Um, my teachers have been people like Gil Evans. You know? Who, who at the age of seventy-six, was still learning. Was still listening. Still had an open mind. It, you just don't get to the end of it. It's not just about three chords and a relative minor. If you think that then your missing an awful lot. At the same time, you can create beautiful, simple work with just those chords (laughs). So, you know, I-I-I-I, I don't want to rely on just those four chords, but, uh, sometimes that's all you need.
