new virus hits world computer networks
Yet another rogue computer program--based in part on the recent "love bug" virus,but more destructive and harder to block--made its way across global computer networks yesterday.
The virus,dubbed "newlove" by some experts and "Herbie" by the Justice Department, spread much more slowly than its predecessor and caused relatively little direct damage. But it did cause many companies and organizations to temporarily disable their e-mail systems so that they could be shored up against the new assault. And it ratcheted up the level of frustration among computer users over the continued vulnerability of the global network.
Computer security experts said growing public awareness of the danger of viruses was one important reason why the renegade program did not propagate as rapidly as the original lovebug, which tricked its millions of victims by greeting them with the subject line "ILOVEYOU" Most recipients yesterday apparently knew enough not to open the attachment that launches the virus.
Like the love bug, the new virus, technically known as a "worm" kills files on the user's hard drive and sends copies of itself to everyone in the victim's Microsoft Outlook address book. Instead of simply eliminating the music, photo and small program files that the love bug went after, however, the new attacker methodically deletes every file on the user'smachine, replacing each one with a blank file named after the virus.
And unlike that original virus, the new program is a master of disguise: Every time it multiplies, it creates a new subject line. The program grabs the name of the file most recently used by the victim and sends it out in a new flurry of mail. That "polymorphous" aspect of the virus makes it harder to block with filtering programs that look for specific words in the subject line.
Anyone who receives suspicious viruses with attachments that end in ". vbs" can avoid problems by simply deleting the e-mail without opening the attachment, and anti-virus companies such as McAfee. com Corp. have already posted software patches to their Web sites that can detect the new virus and block it
