见到朋友，说Long time no see，在英语国家颇为流行，而这当然是‘很久不见’的直译 ，不合英文语法。正确说法是It’s a long time since we last saw each other之类。然则西人为什么会学中国人说话？
原来从前英国人来华经商，学到当时华人‘中学为体，西学为用’的直译式英文，即所谓pidgin English或洋泾滨英文。他们回国之后，抱着开玩笑心情，继续说些洋泾滨‘警句’，于是乎，我们大汉文化Long time no see风靡彼蛮夷之地，慢慢成为彼日常用语矣。一九四零年代流行歌”No Can Do”也把我们的‘不能做’在英语国家发扬光大。Pidgin一字是怎么来的呢？原来英文business（生意）一字，我们祖先觉得难读，于是马马虎虎读做pidgin。这种英文是中西方做生意时用的，所以叫pidgin English。今天，英文This is not my pidgin等于说This is not my business（这和我无关），pidgin仍是business的意思。
