Application Requirements

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Prior to the expected date of entrance at Penn, an international applicant should have completed a program of secondary education that would enable the student to enter a university in his or her own country (e.g., A-levels, Abitur).

Because Penn's admissions decisions are made prior to the announcement of the results of many national examinations (such as the A-levels or the French Baccalaureat), applicants are expected to be enrolled in programs preparing them for these examinations. Applicants must also request that their schools send to Penn predictions of external examination results, in addition to the school marks.

Where national examinations are required for admission to a pre-university program (e.g., GCSE, SPM, HKCE, WASC, O-levels, or India's "Std X" examination), students should have received high marks on these examinations and should present certified copies of the examination results with their applications to Penn.

We are interested in learning about your interests, community service, and extra-curricular activities -- while recognizing that patterns for non-academic involvement vary from country to country.
The SATs and ACTs

The University of Pennsylvania requires that all freshman applicants take the SAT I and three SAT II: Subject Tests, or the ACT. These examinations are given throughout the world several times a year. Credentials earned within your educational system cannot be substituted for these examinations.
All testing must be completed prior to the application deadline so that the scores will reach Penn in time for consideration. Most applicants take the exams more than once.
Although no special preparation is required, students educated abroad may wish to request copies of two booklets, Taking the SAT I and Taking the SAT II, when registering to take these examinations. These booklets give sample questions and will help to familiarize the international student with the timed, "objective-type" examinations used by the College Board.
For more information about the SATs, contact the Educational Testing Service.
For more information about the American College Tests, contact The ACT.
TOEFL

Students who are non-native English speakers must also sit for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).
To register for the TOEFL write to: TOEFL Services, P.O. Box 6151, Princeton, New Jersey, 08541, USA (Fax: +1-609-771-7500; Telephone: +1-609-771-7100; visit TOEFL's website.
Non-native English speakers who are attending English-speaking schools are also encouraged to sit for the TOEFL, because this test may yield a higher score than the verbal portion of the SAT I.
Prospective applicants should register for TOEFL two-to-three months before the test administration date.
Be sure to designate Penn as a recipient university each time you register. Penn's school code is 2926. If you are in your final year and are testing in October or later, we recommend that you do not use Score Choice. If you have taken the test but did not designate Penn as a score recipient, please do so afterwards. Send Penn an unofficial copy of your scores as well.

Advanced Standing

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

High performance on some nationally sponsored or administered secondary school examinations may entitle a student to advanced standing at Penn. These exams include the A- and AS-levels, the French Baccalaureat, the Abitur, the IB (higher-level subjects), the Italian Maturita, the Federal Swiss Maturity Certificate, Denmark's Studentereksamen, Iceland's Studentsprof, and Finland's Matriculation Certificate.

Advanced Standing placement may allow the student to complete a Penn degree in less than four years. Advanced standing is not granted until the student has been admitted and the original or an official copy of the certificate from the appropriate examining agency has been received and evaluated by Penn.

Students enrolled in their first year of university studies in the Philippines, or those who will not have university examinations to present to the selection committee, should apply as freshmen.

In order to earn a Penn degree, a transfer student must complete at least two academic years at Penn, or the equivalent of one half the courses required for the degree. Applicants for a second bachelor's degree (where the first degree is considered equivalent to a U.S. bachelor's degree) will not be considered; the exceptions are students seeking a second degree in Nursing, and Engineering applicants without a science-related or engineering-related first degree. Transfer applicants must furnish original or certified true copies of educational records (with certified English translations if appropriate) reflecting all completed secondary and university course work and examinations, as well as an official catalog or syllabus from each university.
