1.1 Purpose
The purpose of this standard is to define and communicate acceptable porosity levels in cast powertrain components. This standard may recommend but does not dictate inspection procedures. Any inspection procedure verifying conformance to this standard is acceptable.
1.2 Scope
This standard is for the use of supplying parts under purchase orders of Magna Drivetrain - New Process Gear, Inc. This standard is limited in its application to those engineering drawings which call out this standard number or refer to this standard within some other standard or specification.

This standard is to be applied to castings as shipped to New Process Gear, however, determination of conformance to this standard may require inspection after final machining.

This standard is to be applied to porosity defects only and does not define the acceptability of any other form of casting defect.

This standard is independent of and does not supersede any leak test or other stated requirements.
1.3 Definitions
Defect – A discontinuity whose size, shape, orientation or location makes it detrimental to the useful service of the part in which it occurs.

Gross porosity – Large voids with a major dimension exceeding 3.0 mm.

Major dimension of void – The longest straight-line distance across a void region (i.e. the diameter of the smallest circumscribed circle around a void).

Porosity – Voids within cast material resulting from material shrinkage and/or gas evolution.

Porosity density – number of discrete porosity voids within a given surface area.

Porosity spacing – The shortest distance between the edges of adjacent porosity voids.

Thru porosity – Void(s) with a continuous leak path from the interior (pressurised side) to the exterior (environment side) of the cast or machined component.

Visual porosity – Voids that can be seen with the naked eye, with no magnification or surface treatment required.

2. POROSITY ACCEPTANCE LEVEL DEFINITIONS

G. Sample worst-case porosity by level;

Level 1 Level 2 Level 3 Level 4 Level 5

2.2 Threaded Holes
A. Threaded holes must withstand a minimum 125% of maximum assembly torque without thread failure. Torque specifications are available from NPG Product Engineering.

B. Threads shall be tested using the mating fastener or closest possible equivalent. A spacer block or washer stack shall be used to simulate the nominal height, clearance hole diameter and coefficient of friction of the mating (clamped) component. Mating part details are available from NPG Product Engineering.
