很有特点的句子，翻译起来也很难。

It is not defect but lack of character in a man that really matters.

It is not so much defect as lack of character that devalues a man.

这句话难以译至少有三点：
1）原文押韵，如果觉得一定要保留一些韵味的话，我暂时只想到了demerit和merit。

2）不怕...就怕...这一工整的结构能否在译文中体现出来？

3）“怕”字怎么理解？

我的第二种译法也许有点自由发挥过度。我的解释是：让一个男人贬值的与其说是缺点还不如说是缺少特点，进一步理解：一个男人有点缺点不要紧，有特点你还是一样有价值。有那么一点缺点有什么好怕的？

多的是高手。

It is inevitable for a man to have some shortcomings. However, it is deplorable for him to have no character!
"...怕有...点，...怕没...点" 与
"...able ... to have some ... ...able ... to have no" 相对.

或
A (real) man may not be flawless, but he must not be characterless!

或
A man does not have to strive to be flawless, but he has to make sure he is not characterless!

1. What a man fears is not to have a defect
but to lack a unique quality.
2. A man is not concerned about defects but about lack of uniqueness.

It's okay for a man to have some bad points, but not okay if he lacks uniqueness.
