It is a city both ancient and modern. Metropolitan Harbin is not old city by word or Chinese standards having been established in 1896. It was the great Trans Siberian railway that created modern Harbin. The final agreement to allow the Russians to build the links in this great railway was signed on May 22,1896. The engineers and workers began arriving in April of 1897, and the line was open for business July 1,1903. Harbin was at the center of the construction, and thousands of workers both Chinese and foreign created a “boom town”. This cultural mix is still expressed in the food and architecture of the city.
