Unit 4 A charity show
Objectives:
1. Bring in the concept of “charity”
2. Understand the text, learn useful expressions(Reading)
3. Learn the vocabulary about theaters(Vocabulary)
4. Grasp the usage of “because” ,“because of”, “so”, “hope and wish”(Grammar)
5. Learn to oragize a charity show(Intergrated Skills, Speak up)
6. Learn to use contractions(Pronunciation)
7. Try to design a poster and write a speech about the charity show the Ss designed(Main task)
Period 1 Welcome
Words and expressions:
charity, host, wish, cat, hold a microphone, be the host of…, practise a lot, only if, sleep less during the day
Lead-in: Begin with “helping hands club”, lead in the concept of “charity”(explain a little). We can also use “denate …to” and “raise money for” to explain. The give Ss some exaples in China to deep the understanding.
Step 2: Go into Part B first, make Ss know more about charities in China. Explain more of each charity. Ask ss if they know any other charity in China, What they are.
Step 3: Ask Ss what else we can do for charity. Move to Part A. finish the exercise and discuss what eise we can do for charity.
Step 4: End the discussion with “holding a charity show”, ask Ss if they know how to oragnize a charity show or if they have seen any charity shows. Move to comic. Practice as ususl.
Period 2,3 Reading
Words and expressions:
raise, oragnizer(oragnization), duty, event, success, business, guest
(powerpoint p13,14)
Lead-in: Ask Ss why eddie can’t be a good host? Or How can Eddie be a good host? Open the discussion, What should a good host of the charity show be?
Step 2: Ask ss to read the instruction, ask who’s the host of the show. Then begin with new words(on powerpoint)
Step 3: first listen: listen without opening the book, Then answer: What charity did the show raise miney for?
Sten 4: open the book, read after the tape, Do part C1. Then check answers.
Step 5: Read by themselves, answer detail Qns. (on powerpoint) check answer orally.
Step 6: Finish C2, check answers.
Step 7: Pay attention to words and expressions, do B1 and b2, check answers in class.
Step 8: explain key words and expressions on text.
Tips: For more able Ss, teacher can just ask them to retell the text in their own words, or let them image if they were Rocky, what they will do; for less able Ss, teacher can just let them shorter the text.
Period 4 Vocabulary
Words and expressions:
Audience(UC There was a large audience in the theater.), curtain, exit, stage, voice, actor, perform(proformance), hang(hung, hanged, hanging), make your voice sound louder, perform in a show, watch a show
Lead-in: Ask Ss if they have been to the theater/cinema, what they can see there.
Step 2: Ask ss to finishe the exercise on p63, then ask them if they can say anything else in the theater.
If they feel hard, teacher can show them some pictures of theaters or cinemas.
Pay attention to the explainations of Patr B.
Step 3: teacher can give more explaination of the words and let Ss find out the meanings.
Period 5,6 Grammar
Words and expressions:
ground, decision, poster
Lead-in: Using “why” Qns and let Ss answer with “because”.
Review the usage of “since”, “as” .
Ss also need to practise to ask Qns when meet “Because…”.
Step 2: read the examples and finish exercise, check answers.
Step 3: ask Ss to compare the 2 sentences: •I didn’t go to the cinema because the rain was very heavy.
•I didn’t go to the cinema because of the heavy rain.
Ask them to find out the same and difference.
Step 4: ss need to conclude the rule of using “because” and “because of”, if they can’t, give them more examples to feel the rules.
Step 5: finish exercies of Part B, check answers.
Step 6: Give them extra practice.
Step7: ask Ss to rewrite the sentences in exercise using “so”. Go straight on and learn the usage of “so”. Finish the exercise and check answers. If possible, teacher can gie Ss some wrong sentences to correct, let them remember: we can’t use “because” and “so” in the same sentence.
Step 8: Giving examples or show the list of the usages “hope” and “wish”one by one, give enough examples and exercise.
Pay attention to tips.
Step 9: finish exercise on P67, check answers.
Period 7,8 Intergrated skills, Speak up and Pronunciation
Words and expressions:
Phone, matter, design the poster, set up the stage, volunteer to do, at a big therter
Steps: on powerpoint
Tips: Ss should use “hope ”, “wish”, “because”, “because of” ,“so” to make their own dialogue.
Period 9 Main task
Words and expressions:

Ss need to design their own charity shows and finish their own posters.
Period 10 Checkout
Words and expressions:
I have passed them all. Write back soon, come on stage with a microphone, clap and shout excitedly
Steps: review the content of the whole unit.
