Green Star tests advanced biodiesel reactor
Green Star Products announced last week that they have successfully tested an
advanced biodiesel reactor that performs the conversion roughly 30 times faster than the
industry standard.
While conventional biodiesel plants can require up to 90 minutes for the chemical
reaction to occur among vegetable oil, alcohol/methanol and the catalyst, Green Star said that
its new reactor requires about two minutes to complete the biodiesel conversion.
Chula Vista, Calif.-based Green Star was able to make the reaction work on three
different sizes of reactor, the largest rated at 10 million gal/year.
Furthermore, the design of the reactor is such that it is relatively inexpensive to
construct, Green Star said. The basic production cost has is about $30,000 per reactor for a 10
million gal/year module.
While the engineering advances would significantly reduce the cost and time of
biodiesel production, chief executive Joseph LaStella acknowledged that full-scale production
still required major capital outlays.
"The balance of the infrastructure - land, building, electrical, storage facilities, railroad
access and final cleanup - will still be required," LaStella said.
Privately held Green Star, formerly known as B.A.T. International, produces and
sells biodiesel and machinery used in power generation. The company is developing a
biodiesel and ethanol-capable plant, at a 60 million gal/year capacity, to be located in
North Carolina.
