Abstraet Photoinitiated inverse emulsion polymerization of sodium acrylate(AANa)in kerosene was carried out at room or lower temperature,using 2,2一dimethoxy一2一phenylacetophenone(DMPA)as the initiator.Kinetic investigations indicated that ,the polymerization could be completed in about 30 min and produce polymer with high molecular weight(106一107 ).It was found that monomer droplets are the main sites for the polymerization(nucleation).With the increase of DMPA concentration,polymerization rate(Rp )reaches a maximum value while molecular weight of the produced polymer has an adverse result,but the dependence of R on incident light intensity is similar.Influences of other parameters such as monomer concentration,emulsifier content and reaction temperature.etc.were also studied.At lower PH values of water
phase,Rp depends strongly on the pH due to the electrostatic interaction between the ionized radicals and the monomer.At higher pH,Rp shows a slight dependence on pH.

INTRoDUCTIoN
Investigations on therlna1 initiated or y-rays initiated inverse emulsion polymerization of water—soluble monomers have been reported .Photoinitiated polymerization can take place easily in a solution or microemulsion systemL, because of their stable transparency and dynamic structures. but this is seldom
reported in the studies on inverse emulsion photopolymerization.
In our previous papers.the results on the measurement of the light intensity in inverse emulsion suggested that light could penetrate into the system by internal reflection and scattering.Furthermore,the characterization,mechanism and kinetics in photoinitiated inverse emulsion polymerization of water—soluble acrylamide were given.It seems that photoinitiated inverse emulsion polymerization could combine the
advan tages of inverse emulsion polymerization and photopolymerization,that is,polymerization could be carried out in concentrated monomer solution and with high reaction rate in a 1ower viscosity media.which facilitates heat remova1.Moreover.it could be completed expediently in a short time even under a 1ower reaction
temperature,which is beneficial to the production of high molecular weight polymer.These facts provide great
potentialities in practice as a new method to prepare some widely used water.soluble polymers.
In this paper,the inverse emulsion photopolymrization of water—soluble sodium acrylate(AANa)is reported.Quite high polymerization rate,high conversion and high molecular weight of polymer were obtained because the properly stirred inverse emulsion is wholly exposed to almost equal illumination in the process of polymerization.The characteristics of inverse emulsion photopolymerization of AANa were described and parameters influencing the kinetics of polymerization were examined.
