In early spring, migrating wild geese wing their way north toward their Arctic breeding grounds. At the tail end of winter just a month ago, the almanac (年历) contains an almost identical observation—“Wild Geese Return to their Northern Home”. This pair of goose sightings brackets the beginning and end of staggered flocks—a phenomenon well known to birdwatchers. Geese that vacation furthest south generally begin their migration about a month earlier than their cousins who winter at lesser latitudes. The flow of geese is reversed and paired in the fall. “Wild Geese Come" is succeeded a month later in the almanac by “Wild Geese Come as Guests”. Migration season easily spans a month. Early birds pass overhead in September while stragglers make their way some time in October.

Geese fly in family units and in V-shaped wedges. Father Goose takes the lead in the sky, with the mother bringing up the rear, youngsters in between. When the birds splash down to feed and rest on water however, Mother Goose swims out to lead the family.

In Asia, all the large, migratory members of the Anser family are considered elegant birds. They appear in numerous paintings and poems, overlaid with autumnal associations of yearning and melancholy beauty. Wild geese are often pictured with the full autumn moon.
