从词义的角度来说，want 着重于因缺少或不足感觉到需要而渴望得到，wish多指难于实现或不可能实现的愿望。

从用法的角度来说，want 的宾语只能用名词、不定式或“名词 + 不定式”，wish 还可以用虚拟的从句作宾语，例如：

• Do you want another cup of coffee?你想再来一杯咖啡吗？。【不用wish】

• I want/wish to see a doctor at once. 我需要马上去看医生（want）/ 我特别想马上去看医生（wish，言外之意是“只不过是个愿望”）。

• I want/wish you to think it over. 我希望你仔细考虑一下（want）/ 我倒是希望你仔细考虑一下（wish，言外之意同上）。

• I wish you well and happy. 我祝愿你健康愉快。【不用 want】

• He wished he hadn't done it. 他想要是他没这样做那该多好。【不能用 want】

want用作及物动词，意为“要、想要、希望、需要、必要”等。用法为：

1、 后接名词或代词：

But they don’t want peace.但是，他们不愿意要和平。

Countries want independence，nations want liberation and the people want revolution。国家要独立，民族要解放，人民要革命。

I want your promise（opinion，criticism）。我希望你答应（提意见、提出批评）。

What do you want？你想要什么？

2、 后接不定式：

Somebody wants to see you。有人要见你。

I want to meet them。我想要见见他们。

He wants to go home now。

You don’t want to be rude。你何必这样粗鲁。

You want（=ought）to see a doctor at once。你应该立刻去看医生 。

3、 后接带不定式的复合结构：

I want you to meet them。我要你去见见他们。

You can study any subject you want to。你可以学任何想学的科目。

I’ve wanted to speak to you so badly all these days。这几天我迫切想和你谈谈。

4、 后接带分词的复合结构：

We don’t want anything said about this。我们希望这时不要谈起了。

I don’t want the children taken cut in such weather。我不希望在这种天气把孩子带出去。

5、 后接动名词（此时，want意为“需要”）：

My hair wants cutting。我的头发需要理了。

This curtain wants washing。这窗帘该洗了。

Our house wanted dong up。我们的房子需要翻修啦。

注意：

1、 want后接动名词一般式的主动式，表示的却是被动的意思。

2、 这一意思的表达，也可用need。如最后一句就可分别说成：

Our house needs dong up。

Our house needs to be done up。

wish用作及物动词，其意义与用法如下：

1、表示“希望、祝愿”之意，后接双宾语、复合宾语（宾补为形容词和副词）或宾语从句（从句谓语用虚拟语气，即动词用过去时或过去完成时）。如：

We wish you success（a happy new year，a good journey，etc.）。我们祝你成功（新年愉快、一路平安）。

People wish the old man well。人们祝愿那位老人身体健康。

They don’t want him to stay there。They wish him away。他们不想让他留在那里。他们希望他走掉。

I wish I were（was）a bird。我巴不得变成一只鸟儿。

He wished（that）he could come。他要能来就好了。

2、表示“想要、希望（=want）”，后面可接不定式、含不定式的复合结构及代词。如：

Do you wish me to leave now？你要我现在离开吗？

Do you wish to leave now？你想现在就离开吗？

What do you wish？你想要什么？

When do you wish it（to be）finished？你要它什么时候完成？

3、 wish用作不及物动词时，意为“愿望、希望”，与介词for连用。如：

How I wish for a pair of wings！我巴不得插翅高飞！
