At the Operation Level
16.1 OVERVIEW
In parts Ⅱ，Ⅲ，and IV of the book,we considered automated production systems. Our focus in Part Ⅱ was on flow line systems for high-volume production.In Part Ⅲ,numerical control systems used to automate the job shop and batch manufacturing were described .In Part Ⅳ,we discussed computer-aided manufacturing with emphasis on systems for process monitoring and control.
Now,in Part Ⅴ,we will consider various systems for manufacturing support.These systems distinguish themselves from those previously considered by being more software-oriented rather than hardware-oriented.Transfer lines,NC machines,and process control systems are concerned with automation hardware-direct automation of the manufacturing operations.When we speak of systems for manufacturing support,we are referring to systems that interface with the manufacturing operations in an Indirect way.Most of these systems rely on the use of the computer for practical implementation.Accordingly,they fall within a scope that we have defined in Chapter 10 as CAM for manufacturing support.
