人们普遍认为，牛顿是大科学家，是近代科学的象征。他生前就成为科学界的主宰，几乎被当作偶像崇拜。他作为英国皇家学会连任24年的终身会长，法国科学院至尊的外国院士，还兼任英国造币局局长和国会议员，并前所未有地被封为贵族，获得爵士称号。他死后作为自然科学家又第一个获得国葬，长眠于威斯敏特教堂，还是历代帝王和第一流名人的墓地。

牛顿身后的声望有增无减。他不仅以不朽的著作《自然哲学的数学原理》、《光学》等流传于世，而且由于后继大师们的发展，他的思想观念长期统率着科学战线上的士卒。他在物理、数学研究上的主要成果，至今仍是各国大中学生必修的功课。不是天生的神童.
