所谓酸雨就是pH值小于5.6的雨、雪、雹或其他形式的大气降水，是大气受到污染的一种表现。最早引起注意的是酸性降雨，所以人们习惯于形象地统称为酸雨。目前国际上认可pH值5.6为酸雨判别的基准值（base line value）。酸雨中含有多种无机酸和少量有机酸，其中绝大部分是硫酸和硝酸，并以硫酸为主。硫酸和硝酸是由人为排放的二氧化硫（SO2）和氮氧化物（NOx）转化而成的。SO2和NOx可以是当地排放的，也可以是从远处迁移而来的。酸雨直接危害植物，使大气能见度降低，腐蚀建筑材料和金属结构，使古建筑、雕塑等受到损害。
