Olive Cromwell (p245, par1)--- (1599-1658), lord protector of the Commonwealth of England, Scotland and Ireland (护国公) （1653-58）. A minor landowner, he became prominent in the early days of the English Civil War as a member of parliament and as commander of the “Ironsides” cavalry regiment (克伦威尔铁甲骑兵团) he had created. Largely responsible for victory at Marston Moor (1644), he became lieutenant general of the New Model Army (以铁甲军为主力、由议会军改编而成的新模范军)，leading his men to victory at Naseby and Langport in 1645. At first inclined to negotiate with Charles I, the king’s untrustworthiness so infuriated him that he lent all his weight to the latter’s trial and execution. Essentially a dictator, he saw his wish to rule through parliament continually thwarted by the intransigence (不妥协或让步) of the Puritan politicians. His regime, though benevolent, suppressed rather than solved the nation’s problems and they broke out anew at his death.
