Wuxi has an ancient tradition of folk art. Of Wuxi’s many local products, the following are most famous: the Huishan Clay Figures, Wuxi embroidery, and Wuxi carvings.

History records show that Wuxi embroidery was already being sold around the country 200 years ago. Originally, Wuxi embroiderers mainly based their designs on plants, but now designs use a variety of subjects and are much more complex.

Wuxi embroidery hit its peak in history during the time of the Kuomintang government. But after the mid-1930s, embroidery gradually declined in popularity as an art form in China.

In the 1980s, a group of local artists documented 104 traditional embroidering methods. And based on these methods, they created a new one, called Jingweixiu, or micro embroidering. Embroidery made using this method is the most exquisite to be found in the country.
