In the tradition of British and Irish boy bands like Take That and Boyzone comes Dublin's Westlife, a quintet consisting of Shane Filan, Nicky Byrne, Bryan McFadden, Mark Feehily, and Kian Egan. Filan, Egan, and Feehily were among the group's six founding members, but the other half of the group was dispatched when Louis Walsh, Boyzone's manager, took interest in them. This made room in the band for Byrne and McFadden; Walsh also introduced Westlife to Boyzone vocalist and solo artist Ronan Keating, who became the group's co-manager shortly after they cemented their recording contract. The group's first single, 1999's "Flying Without Wings," entered the U.K. charts at number one, a feat they replicated with "Seasons in the Sun" and "Swear It Again" in 2000. Their self-titled debut album met with similar chart-topping success and quickly went platinum in their homeland. Westlife was released in the U.S. by Arista Records in early 2000.

It Started out as a local group called IOU in Sligo, Ireland. How did it Start?
The original members were performing in a local production of Grease in December 1996.

Shane Filan's mum contacted Boyzone's manager, Louis Walsh and asked him to check them out. Louis had already seen them when they made a brief appearance on Irish TV. Kian Egan and Shane Filan travelled to Dublin to meet Louis in February of 1998 and he was impressed with them. He got them a support act with the Backstreet Boys, and the rest, as they say, was history... What's the difference between Westlife and IOU?
There's a big difference between the two. Louis held auditions in June 1998 and changed the original line-up of IOU. Three were dropped out of the original six, leaving Shane Filan, Kian Egan and Mark Feehily. Later, two were picked from the auditions, mainly, Nicky Byrne, and Bryan McFadden, both from Dublin. Their first-ever big break came during the Smash Hits Tour, December 1998. They won the Best New Tour Act, which Boyzone, BSB and 5ive has previously won before. Obviously, it meant that it was a sign that there would be bigger things to come. Initial Chart Success
Their first single, Swear It Again was launced in Ireland in March of 1999. It became the biggest selling debut single in the history of Irish pop and spent a whopping five weeks at the number one spot. It also went straight in at number one in the UK, when it was released during April of 1999. It stayed at that spot for two weeks. Why the Change of Name from WestSide to WestLife?
Apparently, there were some existing bands also named WestSide at the time, so as to avoid trouble in the future, they changed their name to Westlife. I wonder where those bands called WestSide are right now?!?!
