Bodies of murdered engineers flown home

The bodies of three Chinese engineers who were shot dead in Pakistan on Wednesday returned home on Friday via a Pakistani air force plane.

Investigations are focusing on why no guards escorted the engineers the day when they were attacked. Local police usually accompanied the group during their travels in the country.

The special plane carrying the bodies landed at Urumqi airport in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region on Friday. It is scheduled to arrive at Luogang Airport in Hefei in East China's Anhui Province on Saturday.

Earlier in the day, 10 other Chinese engineers who worked together with the victims returned to Hefei. They are all from Hefei Cement Research & Design Institute, and were in Pakistan to offer technical services for the construction of a cement factory there.

The guards of the Chinese engineers were not accompanying them when they were attacked, local police officer Pervez Zahoor was quoted by Xinhua News Agency as saying.

"Police are investigating as to why the guards did not do so that day," he said.

Residents to order film tickets via cell phone

Long queues at cinemas buying hot tickets for blockbusters will become rare as Beijing residents will be able to order film tickets via cell phone networks in a month.

Film ticket circulation service on cell phone, also dubbed the "Green channel of film tickets ordering," is aiming at lowering the cost of ticket circulation and easing the ticket distribution pressure on such popular film-watching days as summer and winter vacations or Valentine's Day.

"People log onto the net through cell phones, then choose cinema seats, watch trailers, browse information for new films and read cinema introductions," said Guan Zheng, the publicity chief of Xingmei Digital Media Company Ltd, the service provider.

"Film fans can enjoy various preferential prices if they order tickets via cell phones," Guan said.

Meanwhile, the cell phone ticket circulation platform provides subscribers with general mobile phone services like jokes, videos, flashes, phone ring downloads and games.

The service is about to be put into trial at the Beijing-based Xingmei International Cinema for a month before being putting into use at other cinema chains both in and outside Beijing, as the service is going to be improved through gradual expansion, said Guan.

China's rejuvenated film industry has seen more and more zealous moviegoers. Up to the end of 2005, China has had more than 3,000 specialized cinemas, among which there are 1,243 modern cinemas with 2,668 silver screens and 36 cinema chains.

Currently, many people buy film tickets on the Internet or by phoning the cinema's ticket office or simply queuing at the cinema gate, methods which, however, fail to quench ticket thirst on popular days like the May Day holiday, the National Day holiday or Valentine's Day. The inefficient ticket circulation system contributes the most to the failure.

Experts say the introduction of the cell phone ticket ordering service creates a more convenient ticket-buying channel, especially during movie-going rush hour.

China central bank says market forces to drive yuan

The People's Bank of China is committed to letting market forces drive exchange rates and interest rates, Wu Xiaoling, a deputy governor of the central bank, told Caijing magazine.

Speculation persists that China might announce another change in the value of the yuan, similar to last July's 2.1 percent revaluation, to avert criticism of its currency policy when President Hu Jintao visits Washington in April.

But the central bank has repeatedly ruled out another administered change, saying the managed float it introduced at the time of the July revaluation will allow the forces of supply and demand to gradually determine the yuan's rate.

"Making interest rates and the foreign exchange rate market-oriented to reflect supply/demand changes in the market has always been a goal that we have pursued," Wu told Caijing, an influential business magazine.

While some people have argued that the yuan should be allowed to appreciate further, Wu said it was difficult to assess correct levels of the currency and that what was needed were moves to make the yuan more market-driven.

Caijing released the text ahead of publication on Monday.

Her comments came after she told Reuters last Tuesday that the yuan's faster pace of appreciation this year had been the result of market forces.

"I think this is the result of market operations and what we want is to let the market mechanism, based on supply and demand, play a role, she said.

The yuan can theoretically rise or fall by 0.3 percent a day against the dollar but, to Washington's frustration, it has so far moved only a fraction of that range in daily trading.

The White House, facing political pressure from a record US trade deficit, renewed its call last week for Beijing to let the yuan trade more freely, something it said was in China's own interest.

The yuan closed at 8.0483 per dollar on Friday. It has risen just 0.76 percent since the revaluation.

Chinese policy makers are aware of the political and economic risks posed by the country's large trade and investment surpluses. To tackle them, Wu said China needed to modify some of its economic policies to restrict capital inflows and encourage outward investment.

China is also taking its time about freeing up interest rates. The PBOC sets commercial banks' deposit rates and requires them to charge at least 90 percent of the benchmark lending rate it fixes.

But the central bank approved interest rate swaps earlier this month, in what it said was an unevitable part of the process of liberalising interest rates, and state media say the bank is also considering a formula to adjust its rediscount rate periodically.

She cited venture capital and the bond market as potential growth areas in China's efforts to boost its underdeveloped capital market.
