Alonso made his first competitive start in a 2-1 victory against Ukraine in Spain\'s penultimate qualifier. He also featured against Armenia and was on the field in Oslo when his country advanced to Portugal with a 5-1 aggregate play-off triumph against Norway.

Club
One of the best players to come through the ranks at Real, Alonso first appeared for the San Sebastián outfit in 1999/00. He then spent the first half of the next season on loan at lowly SD Eibar before getting an extended run in the side. Came to prominence in 2001/02 despite Real\'s troubles at the wrong end of the Primera División.

2002/03: Was a star performer for Raynald Denoueix\'s team as Real challenged for the Spanish title, finishing second behind Real Madrid CF to qualify for the UEFA Champions League.

2003/04: Flitted in and out of the Real side but still produced several memorable performances. Highlights include his headed goal against Galatasaray SK in the Champions League and a spectacular volley against Valencia CF as he appeared on 35 occasions and scored three times in the league.
