P.S. Actually in some cases it doesn't necessarily have to be male. like "buddy system", which means that you have a partner so you two do it (whatever it is) together.

Buddy is the kind of relationship more like a brotherhood, like in "drinking buddies". if you refer your female friend as buddies, it's ok. Just give people (at least for me) the impression that you guys are boyish(not girly).

仔细想了想，好像上次听朋友说时，她是说一男一女，那我就不确定了。

我们外教这么说她的一个好朋友，她们是姑娘，一起来中国的。所以美国人是这么说，那理论上就是可以的。
不过中国人用英语总是字典英语，字典上确实就是“好兄弟”。所以如果是写给中国人看的就不要用了。
