平遥古城1986年国务院公布为第二批国家历史文化名城。目前全县境内拥有全国重点文物保护单位3处，省级重点文物保护单位6处，县级文物保护单位90处。其文物古迹之多，价值之高，内容之丰富，为全国县级城市中所罕见。在这座古城的珍贵文物中，有建于北汉天会七年（963年）的镇国寺万佛殿；有始建于北齐武平二年（571年）的双林寺；有始建于唐显庆二年（657年）的清虚观；有建于北汉天会七年（963年）的文庙大成殿；也有建于清康熙十年（1671年）的惠济桥。
平遥称古陶地，是帝尧的封地。平遥古城原为夯土城垣，始建于西周宣王时期（前827年～前782年）。明洪武三年（1370年），也于军事防御的需要，在原西周旧城埂的基础上扩建为今天的砖石城墙。
平遥古城是中华人民共和国境内，现存最为完整的明清且城。它是中国汉民族中原地区古县城的典型代表。由于县城的建立，到清道光三年（1823年），在平遥古城内诞生了全国第一家票号“日升昌”。“日升昌”的创立，在中国古近代金融史上具有划时代意义，它标志着中国近代性质的新型金融业，在中国封建社会后期的商业和金融肌体中然生成。
迄今为止，这座城市的城墙、街道、民居、店铺、庙宇等建筑，仍然基本完好，原来的建筑格局与风貌特色大体未动。城内及近郊古建筑中的珍品，也大多保存完好，它们同属平遥古城现存历史文物的有机组成部分，它们同为研究中国政治、经济、文化、军事、建筑、艺术等方面历史发展的活标本。
平遥县城墙。明洪武三年(1370年)建，周长6.4公里，是山西现存历史较早、规模最大的 一座城城墙。明、清两代都有补修，但基本上还是明初的形制和构造。城为方形，墙高12米左右，外表全部砖砌，墙上筑的垛口，墙外有护城河，深广各4米。城周辟门六道，东西各二，南北各一。东西诈外又筑以瓮城，以利防守。城墙上原有料敌台楼九 十西座，城门上原建城楼，四角处还有角楼，已大多残坏，唯城墙依然如故。城内街道、市楼、商店等还保留原有形制。是研究我国明代县城建置 的实物资料。位于太原市西南的平遥县是全国仅存的4座完整古城之一。该景点完整无损，并于墙内建筑浑于一体，具有旅游和鉴赏价值。古城南与介休市 接壤，北于祁县相邻，是大运公路必经之地，交通十分便利，古城内各种服务齐备，各种名吃、店铺独具特色，城外宾馆、酒家、商场一应具全。 平遥牛肉以其纯、真、鲜美名扬神洲。
