After escalating U.S. involvement in Vietnam through the 1960's, President Richard M. Nixon announced in 1969 that the U.S. would begin withdrawing its forces from the war ravaged country. With stepped up American training, the South Vietnamese were encouraged to play a larger role in their own defense. Despite the U.S. troop withdrawals, opposition to the war increased. Antiwar protests and marches drew thousands of people in Washington, D.C., and other cities throughout the country. Television brought the war into America's living rooms. Scenes of the war's horrors turned many people against continued U.S. involvement in Vietnam. The last American ground forces left Vietnam in 1973. But the war did not end until 1975 when South Vietnam surrendered to the North. As the North Vietnamese army entered Saigon, people fled to the American embassy. Congress provided emergency aid to evacuate Americans and some South Vietnamese from the city.

Vietnam War (1954- 75) a long CIVIL WAR in Vietnam between the North and the South. The government of the south, in SAIGON, was helped by the US and other countries to fight against the VIET CONG guerrillas (unofficial soldiers) who were supported by the COMMUNIST government of the north. The south was unsuccessful even with US help. Many people in the West associate the war in Vietnam with the strong public protests aginst it. While half a million American soldiers were fighting in Vietnam , protest marches were common at home. Protest songs included the words, "hell no, we don't go!" Many Americans protested when they saw horrific pictures of the war dead shown on television. Others objected that the soldiers who were made to go to the war were often poor or black, while wealthier whites could find ways to avoid the draft (征兵). When President Nixon finally brought the Amaerican forces home in 1973, they were not cheered in the streets for their courage, and they were sometimes treated badly by people who were against the war. Many more people now believe that the US should never have entered the war at all, for both moral and military reasons. Others still believe that the US could have helped the South to win.
