LOS ANGELES -No talking teapots,no dancing dogs,and not a song to be heard.Disney's summer animated blockbuster "Atlantis:The Lost Empire"is an action-adventure film more like a video game than a fairy tale.The film opened in the United States on June 15.

"We've made the equivalent of a fun ride at Disneyland.There is danger,there is movement and there is excitement,"said co-director Kirk Wise about the film.

In the movie,a humble linguist joins an expedition that finds a path to Atlantis,a lost continent.The path,beneath the ocean,connects to a network of underground tunnels and leads to the preserved city,which sits inside an inactive volcano.

"Atlantis"contains the most ambitious special effects ever used in a Disney animation feature.It is wide-screen and blends traditional animation with 3-D computer wizardry.

Disney executives admit it is also a risky venture,because it marks a departure from the company's traditional focus on fairy tales."It is a risk yes,"said producer Don Hahn.Hahn's past credits include two of Disney's biggest animated hits,"Beauty and the Beast"and "The Lion King."

"We have done so many wonderful fairy tales and we will continue to do them in the future,but we felt we were crying out for something fresh and,more importantly,we started to hear that back from our audience and that was the incentive to go out and try to make a movie that broke the mould,"he said.

It took four years to make the film,which includes ocean monsters,crystal-powered flying stonefish and lavish architecture,according to Hahn.

"On the one hand it is extremely liberating,and the flip side of that,very frightening,to create an original story,"Hahn said.

"The challenge of this movie was to create a cast of human characters that the audience would relate to every bit as much as talking animals,"said Kirk Wise,who with partner Gary Trousdale brought to the world "Beauty and the Beast."
