Roller-coaster ride

DEAR Clara,

I'm dictating this while I'm in the intensive care unit of St. Luke's Medical Center. The other day, after my dialysis, I was throwing up everything I took in and was incoherent for a while. So my doctor advised that I be rushed to the hospital immediately. I still don't know what's going on inside this tired, old body -- and, Clara, I really don't care. All I know is that God is in control, and I lift up everything to Him.

Clara, at this point when I am on this exciting roller-coaster ride with the Lord, during which He brings me to the heights and depths of human strength and weakness through situations that make me more submissive to His will, I'd like to tell you a secret:

I'm bursting at the seams with gladness despite the present severity of my condition. I'm talking about my favorite book-the Bible.

I remember a line from "The Warrior is a Child" that goes: "They don't know who picks me up when I fall down, they don't know who lifts me up when no one is around."

My sentiments, precisely. The past few years, you know how stormy life has been, but I've managed to sustain some inner tranquillity because of the strength I've discovered in the Word of God.

A Christian leader once told me that we usually use the life God has given us without first reading the manual that He also has provided. He said, if only we spend time to read it, we'd know how to get the best out of this life. The manual he was referring to was the Bible.

I'd like to share with you some choice passages, Clara. When the going gets tough, they'll surely work wonders for you, as they have for me:

"Then the Lord will guide you always and give you plenty even on the parched land. He will renew your strength, and you shall be like a watered garden, like a spring whose water never fails."-Is 58:11

Indeed, Clara, from the desolation and despair of trials and oppressions, only the magnificent glory of God can deliver us. And only He loves us so much that He made a master plan for our life since the beginning of time. As He said, "For I know well the plans I have in mind for you, says the Lord, plans for your welfare, not for woe; plans to give you a future full of hope." -Jer 29:11

Of course, it is quite difficult to find God's way in this world. But then, He provides us with everything that we need to be able to follow Him: "For the grace of God has appeared, saving all and training us to reject godless ways and worldly desires and to live temperately, justly, and devoutly in this age." -Tit 2:11

Yes, Clara, God is good all the time, isn't He? And His mercy and kindness are so great that He does not keep a record of our past mistakes, but looks at the condition of our hearts that He has helped cleanse and purify.

"Remember not the events of the past, the things of long ago consider not; see I am doing something new! Now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? In the desert, I make a way, in the wastelands, rivers."-Is 43:18-19
