In the novel, Rhett Butler is a man who is used to be notorious. He was expelled from West Point and being not received by everybody in his hometown. He was a survivalist and also a speculator during the Civil War. He is a pragmatist, he only does thing which could bring him benefit. Like his wife Scarlett O’Hara, he is clever, self-confident, independent and selfish. He also does things without paying attention to the public opinion. Like he once told Scarlett in the novel, "I love you, Scarlett, because we are so much alike, renegades, both of us, dear, and selfish rascals". Nevertheless, he is faithful in emotion. He loved Scarlett for many years, and he knew her very well. He always waited Scarlett to love him back. However, when Scarlett realized she really loved him, all of his love and patience were used up. The author also made a contrast between Rhett and Ashley, who is always gentle, tender and even a bit weak sometimes. Even if Rhett is not a real so-called “gentleman”, via the contrast, Rhett is more independent, capable and indomitable.
