Chinese President arrives in Canada

cctv.com 09-09-2005 09:21

In Canada, the Chinese President, Hu Jintao, has arrived in the capital of Ottawa for a state visit aimed at promoting the all-round partnership between the two countries.

This is the first visit to Canada by a Chinese head of state in eight years. On his arrival, Hu said he was looking forward to having an in-depth exchange of views with Canadian leaders on ways to deepen their mutually beneficial cooperation in all areas. Bilateral ties between the two have developed rapidly since diplomatic relations were established thirty-five years ago. This was enhanced when the all-round cooperative partnership was formed in 1997. Bilateral trade reached fifteen and a half billion US dollars last year, a fifty-five percent increase over the previous year. In just the first six months of 2005, the figure was nine billion dollars.

Chinanews, Sept.9 - Yesterday, Beijing Bureau of Statistics chief of audit Mr. Wei said that the research on Beijing city's "Olympic investment and Beijing's economic development" has finished and that research has concluded that in the next four years, the Olympics will provide Beijing cumulatively 1.8 million new jobs.

It was learned that the research experts unanimously concluded that the upcoming Olympics will induce three major changes for Beijing in the next four years and estimated that the Games would add an extra 0.8% of growth to Beijing's gross city product each year and will bring about definite changes to Beijing's industries and business structure. It was estimated that most of the changes brought about by the Olympics would concentrate on tertiary industries with the latter's elevation to take place in the next four years. It was projected that the weight of tertiary industries in Beijing would reach 70% by 2008. In addition, the Olympics would project numerous new jobs for the capital. Experts predict that from this year through 2008, Olympics will add cumulatively 1.8 million new jobs in Beijing.

Most of these new jobs in the next two years would be in construction, afterwards, there would be a marked increase in service related jobs, reaching a peak in 2007 and 2008.

This research also discovers that Beijing must separate Olympic investment from other normal investment and cannot blindly exaggerate the benefits of Olympic investment. At the same time, one must consider the radiating effect of Olympic investment on districts outside of Beijing.

The sweep of New Orleans for the last voluntary evacuees is nearly complete, authorities say, with officers ready to carry out the mayor's order to forcibly remove the thousands of holdouts. "It's getting to the point where they're delirious," Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer Jason Rule said. "A couple of them don't know who they were." He says some don't want to leave unless they can take their pets.
