Dragon Boat Festival is also called Duan Wu or Tuen Ng Festival (端午节/端午节), which is a Chinese festival on the fifth day of the fifth month of the Chinese calendar.

It is held in memory of the Chinese poet Qu Yuan. He commited suicide by drowning himself in a river because he was disgusted by the corruption in the Chu government. The local people, knowing him to be a good man, decided to throw food into the river to feed the fishes to prevent them from eating Qu's body. They also sat on dragon boats, and tried to scare the fishes away by the thundering sound of drums aboard the boat and the fierce looking dragon-head in the front of the boat.

People will eat Zongzi (The food orginally intended to feed the fishes) and will have dragon boat races in memory of Qu.

The Chinese Dragon Boat Festival is a significant (有意义的)holiday celebrated (庆祝)in China, and the one with the longest history (历史最悠久). The Dragon Boat Festival is celebrated by boat races (龙舟赛) in the shape of dragons. Competing teams (竞争团队) row their boats forward to a drumbeat (击古)racing to reach the finish end first.

The boat races during the Dragon Boat Festival are traditional customs (传统习俗)to attempts to (试图)rescue (搭救) the patriotic poet (爱国诗人)Chu Yuan. Chu Yuan drowned (溺死) on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month in 277 B.C. Chinese citizens now throw bamboo leaves (竹叶) filled with cooked rice into the water. Therefore the fish could eat the rice rather than the hero poet. This later on turned into the custom of eating tzungtzu and rice dumplings(棕子).

The celebration\'s is a time for protection (防护) from evil (邪恶) and disease (疾病) for the rest of the year. It is done so by different practices such as hanging healthy herbs on the front door, drinking nutritious concoctions (营养品), and displaying (展示) portraits (画像) of evil\'s nemesis(邪恶报应), Chung Kuei. If one manages to (成功做...) stand (直立)an egg on it\'s end at exactly 12:00 noon, the following year will be a lucky one.

Chinese Dragon Boat Festival is the third largest festival in the Chinese calendar. The Chinese Dragon Boat Festival has the longest history of any of the festivals celebrated in China. It is an annual event held in over 50 countries with 60 million participants and this year it is May 31st.

Chinese Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Poet's Day or Double Fifth Day began more than 2000 years ago on the banks of the rivers in southern China. The fifth day of the fifth moon (Lunar Calendar) commemorates the death of poet and statesman named Qu (Chu) Yuan who drowned himself because his king would not take his advice. To save his body being eaten by fish, the people raced out in their boats and threw bamboo leaves filled with cooked rice into the water. Later, the custom of eating (rice dumplings) tzungtzu became part of the festival.

The first races were meant to mock dragon battles staged in order to waken the hibernating Heavenly Dragon as a fertility rite to ensure plentiful crops. The race was held to avoid bad luck and to encourage the rain. The dragon is said to rule the rivers, seas, clouds and rains.

Traditionally before the race started, a ritual called Awakening the Dragon was performed. A Taoist priest touched the Dragon's eyes, called eye dotting, in order to wake it up. After the race, a similar ceremony was required to put it back to sleep again.

The multi-coloured boats are decorated with fearful looking dragon heads. The whole boat could measure up to 30 metres in length. The crew consisted of 10-22 paddlers, a leader, a steersman, a drummer, a flag waver and a hand clapper. The drummer and hand clapper set the pace.

When a rower or an entire rowing team fell into the water, they would not be helped, as it was believed to be wrong to interfere with the will of the gods.

Legend has it that at noon on the day of the Dragon Boat Festival; it is possible to stand eggs on end. Whoever can do this is said to have good luck all year.

Today these symbolic rituals are no more than amusing entertainment. Dragon boat racing has become increasingly popular every year, both as a sport for physical training and as a favourite pastime enjoyed by the whole family.
