2.1. Catalyst preparation
The technique used to prepare skeletal copper catalystwas based on the methods described in earlier studies [15].A CuAl2 alloy (obtained from Ingot Metals and containing47.8 wt.% Cu) of particle size 210–355 _m was leached ina large excess of 6.1M NaOH solutions at 273 K. After 16 hleaching, the sample was washed in distilled water severaltimes until the pH value was 7, and then stored under 0.1MNa2CO3 solutions. Different amounts (5–25 ml) of 0.1MCr(NO3)3, Co(NO3)2 or Zn(NO3)2 solutions were titratedto the Na2CO3-skeletal copper mixture with careful stirringin order to form well-distributed metal hydroxide depositionson the surface of skeletal copper particles. The mainchemical reactions are as follows:
CO32. + H2O _ OH. + HCO3. (1)
Cr3. + 3OH. → Cr(OH)3 ↓ (2)
Co2. + 2OH. → Co(OH)2 ↓ (3)
Zn2. + 2OH. → Zn(OH)2 ↓ (4)
The liquid/solid mixture was left standing for 3 h, andthen was washed again and stored in distilled water to avoidoxidation.
