Fingerprint Technology Gathers Momentum
Security conscious business in today's networked world not only look for new, improved ways to safeguard highly sensitive information, but also ways to detect or prevent intrusions, or theft of personal and company bank or credit cards, which can lead to sometimes catastrophic financial losses. Most computers and automatic teller machines still rely on personal identification numbers or passwords, things that can be stolen by a clever criminal.
A number of companies are coming up with devices that read something that is universally acknowledged as proof of identification, and it can't be forged, a fingerprint. There are other similar technologies which are also gaining market acceptance, including palm and eye recognition. Traditionally fingerprint-recognition technology has been used in some of the most sensitive government and military systems. But its use is growing to new levels of access data systems, particularly corporate intranets.
Fingerprint identifying starts by scanning in a fingerprint, which is stored on a database containing only the prints of authorized persons.
Using the technology on a computer is one thing, but expanding it to machines like ATMs is a different problem. Scanners will have to be able to read prints of everyone, even the grimy ones, say a gardener or construction worker. Terry Lindh, president of East Shore Technologies, a fingerprint ID search software producer, warns that there will need to be some sort of back-up method.
"Purchasers [banks, health care systems, etc.] recognize the fact that there is a certain percentage of people who are never going to get a finger print match because of some sort irregularity of their print", Lindh said." Even people whose fingerprints normally scan may in some situations, for instance if their hands were burned, wouldn't be able to get their money. Do you think they'd go for that?
When someone seeking admittance to a computer network, a building or whatever, the person just puts his or her finger on a scanner. This scanner, in the case of a network PC, is about the size of a mouse, or can be built into the keyboard. The scanned image of the fingerprint is converted into a grey scale image, similar to a black and white photo and converted to a binary image, by a 'frame grabber'. Finally, the identification software converts the image into a binary format and compares the print with stored images.
