主语从句就是一个从句作为一个句子的主语，引导主语从句的关联词有：that, what, where, when, why, who, whether, how, whatever, wherever, whenever, whoever, and however.
下面的例子将说明主语从句怎样代替原句的主语：

1 Your plan is not permitted.
That teachers punish students physically is not permitted.

2 Your plan is interesting.
What you said is interesting.

3 Your plan surprised everybody.
How he managed to tackle these knotty problems surprised everybody.

4 His plan is still not known yet.
Whether he will travel with us is still not known yet.

5 His plan is not decided yet.
Who will preside this important meeting is not decided yet.

6 His plan is not decided yet.
Where and when the meeting will be held is not decided yet.

7 His plan is still not known yet.
Why he made these stupid mistakes is not known yet.

8 Everybody will be welcome.
Whoever (no matter who) attends this meeting will be welcome.

9 This doesn’t matter at all.
Whichever (no matter which one) you choose doesn’t matter at all.

10 The pop star’s trip will attract his fans attention.
Wherever (no matter where) the pop star goes will attract his fans attention.

11 This will be up to you.
Whenever (no matter when) you leave this flat will be up to you.
二 注意:

A 主语从句必须是陈述句的语序。

False: What are you going to do is your own business.
Right: What you are going to do is your own business.

B That作为引导词不可省略.

That they were truth sisters surprised everybody.

C 为了保持整个句子的平衡，如果主语从句太长，谓语太短, 有时候可以考虑用it 作形
式主语，而把真正的主语---主语从句放在后面; 但如果想强调主语从句，我们可以不
考虑句子平衡，而把主语从句放在句首。

{ Right: It is not a good news that the American government will pass a new bill
to contain the global terrorism.
Right: That the American government will pass a new bill to contain the
global terrorism is not a good news.

{
Right: That the SARS epidemic will spread out of control unless the
government takes drastic measures was absolutely true.
Right: It was absolutely true that the SARS epidemic will spread out of
control unless the government takes drastic measures.

{ Right: Whether or not he will travel to Beijing with John, who is the
general manager of a steel firm, is not clear yet.
Right: It is not clear yet whether or not he will travel to Beijing with
John, who is the general manager of a steel firm.

{ Right: When he can study in Newcastle University, which is located in
the north of England, will depend on his visa.
Right: It will depend on his visa when he can study in Newcastle University,
which is located in the north of England.

D 在下面两种情况下，必须用it 作形式主语，而把真正的主语---主语从句放在后面。

? 在疑问句中。

Is it true that he will be punished seriously by the headmaster?
Does it make any difference who bought these gifts?

? 在感叹句中。

How strange it is that these children are so quiet!
三 注意区别：
A 形式主语结构。

It is difficult that he will have to finish this job by himself before 5pm.

B 强调句型结构。

It is yesterday afternoon that he saved the boy’s life in that cold river.

C 他们的区别是如果把it is …that 省略, a是病句，b是正确的。

a Difficult he will have to finish this job by himself before 5pm.
b Yesterday afternoon he saved the boy’s life in that cold river.
