Some "misguided elements" of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) had plotted to stage a coup d' etat this Friday (Feb 24) morning but were prevented with "preemptive force and dialogue," top AFP leaders said.
AFP Chief of Staff General Generoso Senga said he has placed Brigadier General Danilo Lim, commander of the Philippine Army's elite First Scout Ranger regiment, under restriction, and Colonel Ariel Querubin, a bemedalled Marine officer, was being investigated.
Lim and Querubin were among the founders of the Young Officers Union (YOU), which mounted a bloody coup attempt in 1989 against then-president Corazon Aquino.
The two have been relieved of their positions, Civil Relations Service (CRS) Chief Brigadier General Jaime Buenaflor said.
Senga said Lim and Querubin were "misguided elements who were planning to join protest rallies" to force him to withdraw support from President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
"There will be no withdrawal" of support for President Arroyo, Senga said. "We remain steadfast in adhering to the Constitution."
"We were able to persuade them that what they're planning to do was not the proper thing to do. We have reduced the threat," Senga said in a phone interview.
Philippine Army chief Lieutenant General Hermogenes said cited use of "preemptive force and dialogue" with soldiers in the plot.
Senga said he had called up military commanders early Friday and reminded them that they "will abide strictly with the chain of command."
When asked about the extent of soldiers' recruitment for the plot against Arroyo, he said: "I think it is just small and concentrated only in elements near Metro Manila."
Esperon said the plot was to join a march -- while carrying arms -- that would mark the 20th anniversary of the Edsa People Power revolt.

Thousands are expected to take to the streets this Friday to mark the 20th anniversary of the 1986 People Power uprising and press anew for Arroyo's ouster.
Security around the Camp Aguinaldo general headquarters of the AFP in Quezon City and the Fort Bonifacio headquarters of the Philippine Army in Taguig City has been tightened in the face of the alleged coup threat.
Barricades have been set up around the camp of Fort Bonifacio, closing it to all types of vehicles. While Camp Aguinaldo remains open, strict inspection was being implemented at the gates.
Vehicles queued at the Camp Aguinaldo Santolan gate at around 6am, way before rush hour.
Over a dozen six by six trucks filled with soldiers were parked at the camp's grandstand.
Confirmation of what Senga called the soldiers' "attempted withdrawal of support" for Arroyo followed media reports of an unusual level of activity in Malaca๑ang and the Camp Aguinaldo military general headquarters since Thursday night.
Police checkpoints were set up at exits of the North Luzon Expressway in the direction of Manila, some of them manned by members of the elite Police Special Action Force.
