"The Promise", starring Korean heart throb Jang Dung-Kun, Japan's Hiroyuki
Sanada and Hong Kong stars Cecilia Cheung and Nicholas Tse, opened at Chinese
cinemas after a star-studded premiere Monday night.
The film is poised to be Chen's second Oscar nomination following his 1993
movie "Farewell My Concubine," after Chinese film regulators selected it as the
nation's nominee for the best foreign film, Xinhua news agency said.
The storyline evolves around a slave (Jang), who grows to be a hero as he fights
his fate and falls in love with a beautiful princess (Cheung), who is under
the evil spell of a lecherous duke (Tse).
Sanada plays the Glorious General, who is the master of the slave.
